A full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours unopened, a half-full one about 24, according to FoodSafety.gov. That is usually enough time for us to get there.
- Keep the door shut and group the food together so it insulates itself; move meat to the bottom.
- Check the obvious: plugged in, outlet live, dial set correctly, nothing blocking the door from sealing.
- Do not refreeze anything that has fully thawed and sat above 40°F for more than two hours.

Thick frost on walls or the back panel
The most common freezer complaint and the cheapest to fix: a failed defrost heater, thermostat, or timer. We replace the part and clear the ice.
Frost around the door edge
The gasket is leaking warm air. We replace the gasket and adjust the door.
Cool but not freezing, fridge fine
Weak compressor, low charge, or a dirty condenser. We clean the coils and test the sealed system before quoting.
Freezer and fridge both warm
Compressor, start relay, or control board. Loud buzzing then silence, on repeat, is the compressor trying to start — usually the relay and overload.
Runs constantly, never reaches temperature
Airflow blocked, evaporator fan failed, or a gasket leak. Replace the fan, clear the vents, seal the door.
Chest freezer dead, no sound
Thermostat, start relay, or power. All three are quick to test and two of them are on the van.
Three kinds of freezer
Each type fails differently.
- Refrigerator freezer. Shares a compressor with the fridge and depends on automatic defrost. Most problems are defrost or airflow.
- Standalone upright. Works the same way with its own sealed system.
- Chest freezer. Manual defrost, cold-wall evaporator, thermostat, compressor. When it dies it is nearly always the thermostat, relay, or compressor.
- Garage freezers. Below about 40°F ambient many units stop cycling. If yours struggles only in winter, a garage-ready model or a compressor heater kit is the fix.

Repair cost versus the food inside it.
A defrost heater, thermostat, fan, relay, or gasket is an inexpensive repair. A chest freezer thermostat or relay is cheaper still. The exception is a compressor on a small standalone freezer, where the repair can cost as much as a new unit — we tell you that on the spot. What temperature should a freezer be?
0°F. If a thermometer left in the freezer overnight reads above 10°F, something is wrong and food quality is already suffering.
Why is my freezer frosting up but my fridge is warm?
The defrost system has failed. Ice covers the evaporator, the freezer stays cold behind the ice, and no cold air reaches the fridge. It is one of the most common and least expensive repairs we do.
Do you repair chest freezers?
Yes, in the garage or basement, any brand. Thermostats, relays, and gaskets are on the van. Compressor work on a chest freezer is quoted honestly against the price of a new one.
Can I run a freezer in an unheated garage?
Only if it is garage-rated. Standard freezers stop cycling when the garage drops below about 40°F and the food thaws. A garage kit or a garage-ready model solves it.
