Refrigerator Door Seal Replacement in Northern Virginia
The cheapest part on the refrigerator causes some of the most expensive symptoms. A worn seal lets humid Virginia air in around the clock — longer compressor run, freezer frost, door food spoiling early. One quick visit, OEM gasket, door aligned while we are there.
The decision
Worth replacing on an older fridge? Nearly always.
A gasket is one of the lowest-cost repairs on the appliance, and a leaking seal makes the compressor run longer every hour of the day. On a fifteen-year-old refrigerator that is otherwise cooling fine, a new seal can add years.
- OEM part for your exact model. Universal gaskets cut to fit never seal at the corners.
- Door aligned as part of the job. A perfect gasket on a sagging door still leaks.
- The one exception: a door liner cracked where the gasket seats. Then the liner or door has to be replaced, and that changes the math.

Symptom checklist
Six signs the door seal is the problem.
Cracks, splits, or a flattened section
Usually at the corners or along the hinge side, where the seal folds every time the door opens.
Black mold in the folds that keeps coming back
Once the vinyl has lost its surface, it cannot be cleaned.
Sweating on the door edge or the cabinet next to it
In July and August in Northern Virginia this shows up fast.
Frost along the freezer door side
Or ice on the back wall of a frost-free freezer. If the seal is fine, see freezer repair for defrost faults.
The dollar-bill test fails
Close the door on a bill. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal is not holding there. Try several points around the door.
The door does not pull itself shut from an inch open
The gasket magnet, the hinge cam, or the refrigerator not tilted back. We correct all three.
How it is done
Gasket replacement, done so it actually seals.
| Step | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Match the part | Pull the model number from the inside wall and order the OEM gasket | Corner profiles differ by model even within one brand |
| 2. Warm the new gasket | Soften it so it takes the door’s shape instead of its shipping fold | A cold gasket leaves gaps for weeks |
| 3. Remove and install | Release the old seal, seat the new one corner-first, tension evenly | Uneven seating is the cause of most DIY failures |
| 4. Align the door | Adjust hinges and leveling legs so the door closes square and self-closes | A perfect gasket on a sagging door still leaks |
| 5. Verify | Dollar-bill test at eight points, check for even magnet pull | Proof it sealed before we leave |
Push-in, screw-on, or snap-on — the style decides how the job goes, and we use the manufacturer’s part for your exact model. Most gasket jobs take under an hour once the part is on the truck. Common models are in stock; others arrive in two to four business days.

Good to know
Door seal questions.
We stock and order OEM seals for Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Kenmore, and Sub-Zero, including the magnetic gaskets on Sub-Zero built-ins that most shops will not touch. If the fridge is also not cooling well with the door shut, see freezer repair or compressor repair. Door seal service is available in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Woodbridge, and across Loudoun and Prince William counties.
Can I just clean the gasket instead of replacing it?
If it is dirty but intact, yes. Warm soapy water and a soft brush in the folds, then a thin coat of petroleum jelly to keep the vinyl supple. If it is cracked, torn, or permanently flattened, cleaning will not restore the seal.
How long does a refrigerator gasket last?
Eight to twelve years in most kitchens. Doors that are opened constantly, kitchens that run hot, and households that store bottles in the door shelves shorten that.
Why does my new gasket still leave a gap?
Either it was not warmed and seated corner-first, or the door itself is out of alignment. Both are common with universal gaskets or rushed installs. We adjust the hinges as part of every gasket job.
Does a bad seal raise my electric bill?
Yes. The refrigerator is one of the largest steady loads in a home, and a leaking seal can add a noticeable amount to its run time. In humid months it also makes the unit work harder to remove moisture it should never have let in.
Do you replace freezer door seals too?
Yes. Freezer gaskets fail the same way and cause frost buildup faster because the temperature difference is larger. We replace refrigerator and freezer seals on the same visit if both need it.
