Why refrigerator ice makers stop.
An ice maker fills a tray with a measured shot of water, freezes it, warms the tray slightly, sweeps the cubes into a bin, and repeats. Five parts do that work — inlet valve, fill tube, thermostat or sensor, mold heater, ejector motor. When one fails the cycle stalls at that step, and the stall tells us which one.

What your ice maker is doing tells us what failed.
No ice at all, no sound
Ice maker switched off, control arm up, or a failed module. We test power and the sensor, then replace the module or assembly.
No ice, but you hear it cycle
Water inlet valve not opening, or a frozen fill tube. Replace the valve; thaw and heat the fill tube.
Small, hollow, or bad-tasting cubes
Low water pressure or a clogged filter; off-taste means an old filter or odors migrating from the freezer. Replace the filter, test pressure, clean the bin.
Cubes fused into one block
Freezer temperature swings or infrequent use. We check the defrost system and door seal and adjust settings.
Water in the bin or on the freezer floor
An overfilling valve or a leaking fill cup. Replace the valve, reseat the cup.
Grinding noise, ice will not dispense
Auger motor or a jammed bin. Clear the jam, replace the auger motor if worn.
Two-minute checks
Three things to check before booking.
- Is it switched on? A wire arm pushed up, a slide switch on the front, or an ice-off icon on the panel. It gets bumped more often than you would think.
- Is the water filter overdue? A clogged filter starves the ice maker before it affects the dispenser. Past six months, replace it and give it a day.
- Is the freezer cold enough? Ice makers need roughly 0–5°F. If the freezer is warmer, the ice maker is a symptom — see freezer repair.

How long should an ice maker take to make ice?
A healthy ice maker completes a cycle in roughly 90 minutes to two hours and fills a bin in about a day. Anything slower than that points to water supply or temperature.
Can I replace the ice maker myself?
On some modular units, yes. The catch is that the ice maker is often not the failed part. If you replace it and the valve or fill tube was the cause, you are back where you started. We diagnose first.
Why does my ice maker leak water into the freezer?
The inlet valve is not closing fully, or the fill cup has shifted and water misses the tray. Both are quick repairs.
Do you repair the ice maker in a garage refrigerator?
Yes, though note that most ice makers stop working when the ambient temperature drops below about 40°F unless the unit is garage-rated.
