Refrigerator Compressor Repair in Northern Virginia
Compressor is the one job where a wrong diagnosis costs the most. We test the compressor, the relay, and the inverter before we say the word, then put the real replacement cost next to the price of a new unit so you decide with clear numbers.
Before anyone says compressor
Is it really the compressor? Usually it is something cheaper.
A refrigerator warm on both sides with the lights on gets called a dead compressor more often than it deserves. A large share of those calls turn out to be a start relay, an overload, an inverter board, a condenser fan, or coils so dirty the compressor cannot shed heat — each a fraction of the cost. So we rule them out first.
- Listen. A click every few minutes with a hum in between is a relay or overload, not a compressor.
- Touch. Hot but silent may be seized; warm and running may just be starved of airflow.
- Measure. Winding resistance, running amperage, system pressures. Pumps but no pressure is mechanical; draws no current is electrical.
- Check the inverter. On Samsung, LG, GE, and newer Whirlpool the inverter board drives the compressor — and boards fail more often than compressors do.

What we find
Six outcomes of a “dead compressor” call.
Click, hum, click — no cooling
Start relay or overload protector. The most common outcome of a compressor call, and the cheapest.
Silent, lights on, both sides warm
Inverter board on Samsung, LG, GE, and newer Whirlpool — or a main control board not calling for cooling. Low to moderate cost.
Running hot, cooling poorly
Condenser fan failed or coils packed with dust. The compressor is fine; it cannot shed heat. Clean and replace the fan.
Runs but cannot build pressure
A mechanical compressor fault. This one really is the compressor — and now the repair-or-replace math matters.
One side of a built-in warm
Sub-Zero and some KitchenAid units run two compressors. We replace the failed side only.
The numbers
Compressor replacement cost, and what drives it.
| Scenario | Typical all-in range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start relay or overload only | Low | Most common outcome of a compressor call |
| Inverter board only | Low to moderate | Samsung, LG, GE, newer Whirlpool |
| Standard compressor, basic top-freezer | Moderate; often near the price of a new unit | We usually advise replacement |
| Compressor on a French door or side-by-side | Moderate to high | Worth it under about eight years old |
| Inverter or linear compressor (LG, Samsung) | High; part may be under extended warranty | We check coverage first |
| Built-in (Sub-Zero, KitchenAid, Monogram) | High | Almost always worth it versus cabinetry work |
Replacement is a sealed-system job: recover the refrigerant, cut out the old compressor, braze in the new one with a new drier, pull a deep vacuum, charge to the exact weight on the data plate. Two to three hours with EPA-certified equipment, following EPA Section 608. Every job is a flat rate after diagnosis; the diagnostic fee is waived when you proceed.

The decision
Repair the compressor or replace the refrigerator?
- Repair if the job is less than half the cost of a comparable new refrigerator and the unit is under about ten years old.
- Replace if the repair is more than half, or the unit is older.
- Built-ins break the rule. Replacing them means cabinetry and installation on top of the appliance, so they are repaired at almost any age.
Two things that tip the scale
Warranty, and the second problem.
A compressor still under a manufacturer’s extended parts warranty (common on LG and some Samsung models) can drop the cost to labor only. And a refrigerator with a second problem, like a failing control board, argues for replacement even if the compressor alone would be worth fixing.
We tell you which side of the line you are on, in writing, before you commit to anything.

Good to know
Compressor repair questions.
LG linear compressors and some Samsung inverter units are the compressor calls we see most. GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Kenmore compressors fail less often but we replace them too; Sub-Zero and KitchenAid built-ins are repaired as a matter of course. Sealed-system service is available in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Woodbridge, and across Loudoun and Prince William counties.
How long does a refrigerator compressor last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical for a conventional compressor. Some inverter and linear designs from the mid-2010s failed much earlier, which is why LG and others extended their warranties.
Can a compressor be repaired, or only replaced?
Replaced. The compressor is a sealed unit. What can be repaired are the parts around it: relay, overload, inverter, and fan. That is why we test those first.
Why does compressor replacement cost so much labor?
Refrigerant has to be recovered legally, the old compressor cut out, the new one brazed in with a new drier, the system evacuated to remove moisture, and the exact charge weighed in. Skipping any step shortens the life of the new compressor.
Is a noisy compressor about to fail?
Not necessarily. Rattling is often a loose mount or a fan. A compressor that is louder than it used to be and cooling less than it used to is the combination to watch.
Do you offer a warranty on compressor replacement?
Our 90-day labor warranty applies, and the compressor itself carries the manufacturer’s parts warranty, which is often longer.
