Refrigerator Leaking Water? Where It Comes From and How We Fix It.
Water under or inside a refrigerator almost always traces to one of four things: a clogged defrost drain, a cracked or kinked water line, a failing inlet valve, or a leaking ice maker or dispenser. None of them means the refrigerator is done, but all of them get worse if you wait, and the puddle will find your subfloor. We repair leaks across Northern Virginia at a flat rate approved before any work, usually on the first visit.
Do this first
Find the leak before we arrive.
Two minutes of looking narrows it to one repair and tells us what to bring. Put a towel down and note where the water is.
- Water inside, under the crisper drawers? That is the defrost drain. Meltwater from the freezer cannot reach the drain pan, backs up and runs into the fridge. The most common leak we see and a first-visit fix.
- Water on the floor, behind or under the unit? Pull the unit out and look at the water line where it enters at the back. A pinhole in a plastic line, a loose compression fitting or a cracked inlet valve is the usual source. If the line is wet, turn off the supply valve under the sink or behind the unit.
- Water at the front, from the dispenser or ice chute? A dispenser that drips after use, a frozen ice chute door, or an ice maker overfilling and spilling into the bin. Note whether it drips constantly or only after dispensing.

What we find
The repair behind each leak.
Match where the water shows up to the cause. This is how we diagnose it on the first visit.
Clogged defrost drain
Every frost-free refrigerator melts its evaporator coil daily and drains the water to a pan by the compressor. Food debris or ice blocks the drain, water backs up under the crispers and eventually onto the floor. We clear the drain, thaw the line and, on models known for it, install a drain heater or probe.
Cracked water line or fitting
The quarter-inch plastic line to the ice maker and dispenser gets brittle, kinks behind the unit or loosens at the compression fitting. We replace the line with braided or copper and reseat the fittings.
Failing water inlet valve
The solenoid valve at the back that feeds the ice maker and dispenser cracks or fails to close fully. Symptoms: a slow drip at the back, an ice maker that overfills, or a dispenser that keeps trickling. Direct replacement.
Ice maker overfilling or leaking
A stuck fill valve, a cracked fill cup, or an ice maker that has frozen up and is melting over the bin. On Samsung French door models this pairs with the well-known freeze-up. See ice maker repair and Samsung ice maker repair.
Drain pan cracked or overflowing
The pan under the unit collects defrost water for the compressor heat to evaporate. A cracked pan, or a compressor that is not running hot enough because it is failing, leaves water on the floor. See compressor repair.
Door not sealing
A worn gasket lets warm air in, the coil frosts heavily, and the defrost cycle produces more water than the drain can carry. The leak is the symptom; the gasket is the fix. See door seal replacement.
By type
Where leaks start on each style.
- Top-freezer. Defrost drain at the back of the freezer floor. Clogs with food debris; water ends up under the crispers.
- Side-by-side. Defrost drain plus the dispenser and its water line running through the door. Dispenser drips are common.
- French door. Twin drains on many models, an ice maker in the fridge door or freezer, and a long water line with several fittings. The most leak-prone style by design.
- Bottom-freezer. Drain tube runs down behind the freezer drawer; ice forms on the freezer floor first, then water reaches the kitchen floor.
- Built-in and column. Sub-Zero and integrated units have a drain trough and evaporator pan we service in place. We do these in-house.
Worth fixing?
Leaks are almost always cheap to fix.
A drain clearing, a water line, an inlet valve or a gasket are all inexpensive relative to the refrigerator, and they cover nearly every leak we see. Even an ice maker replacement is a fraction of a new unit.
The cost that matters is the floor. Water that sits under a refrigerator for weeks swells subfloor, lifts vinyl and stains hardwood. That is why we treat leaks as same-day calls.
You approve the flat rate before any work, the diagnostic fee is waived when you go ahead, and every repair is backed by our warranty.
Where the water shows up, and what it usually means.
| Where | Most likely cause | Visit |
|---|---|---|
| Under the crisper drawers, inside | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | Same visit |
| Floor behind or under the unit, back corner | Water line, fitting or inlet valve | Same visit |
| Floor at the front | Overflowing or cracked drain pan, or dispenser drip | Same visit |
| Inside the freezer floor, sheet of ice | Frozen defrost drain (bottom-freezer models) | Same visit |
| Ice bin, water pooling then freezing | Ice maker overfill or stuck fill valve | Same visit on stocked models |
| Everywhere, with heavy frost on the coil | Door gasket or defrost failure | Same visit |
Turn off the water supply if the leak is at the back and the line is wet. Everything else can wait for our window.

Why is there water under my crisper drawers?
The defrost drain is clogged or frozen. Meltwater from the daily defrost cycle cannot reach the drain pan, so it backs up into the fridge. We clear and thaw the drain and, on models prone to it, add a drain heater.
Why is my refrigerator leaking water on the floor?
From the back, it is usually the water line, a fitting or the inlet valve. From the front, it is the drain pan or the dispenser. Inside-first leaks are the defrost drain. Tell us where you see it and we will bring the right part.
Should I turn off the water to the refrigerator?
If the leak is at the back and the line or valve area is wet, yes. The shutoff is usually under the kitchen sink or on the wall behind the unit. If the water is inside the fridge, it is defrost water and the supply is not involved.
Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?
Not to you, but it is to your floor. Water sitting under the unit swells subfloor and lifts flooring within weeks. Put a towel down, keep the area dry and book a same-day window.
My ice maker is leaking into the bin and freezing into a block. Is that the same problem?
Usually an overfill from a stuck inlet valve or a cracked fill cup, sometimes combined with an ice maker freeze-up on Samsung models. Both are first-visit repairs.
Can it be the door seal?
Yes. A worn gasket lets humid air in, the coil frosts heavily and the defrost cycle produces more water than the drain can handle. If you see heavy frost with the leak, the gasket is likely the root cause.
