Quick answer: A Frigidaire refrigerator that is not cooling usually comes down to one of five things, in this order of likelihood on the units we service: a failed evaporator fan (often with an SY EF code on the display), a defrost system failure that has iced the evaporator, a compressor start device or relay on older models, a bad thermistor (OP or SH code), or a main control board (SY CE or SY CF). Dirty condenser coils make all of these worse and are the first thing to check yourself. Below is how to read what the refrigerator is telling you before anyone opens a panel.
Start with the display: Frigidaire error codes explained
Frigidaire and Frigidaire Gallery refrigerators with a digital control panel run a self-check and will show a code when a sensor or fan fails. Most other guides skip this and go straight to “clean the coils.” Check the display first; it can save a diagnostic step.
| Code | Meaning | What it usually means for the repair |
|---|---|---|
| SY EF | Evaporator fan failure | Fan motor is not turning or not reporting speed. Fan replacement, occasionally a harness. |
| SY CE / SY CF | Communication error between control boards | Main board, user interface board, or a wiring connection. Needs meter testing to pick the right board. |
| OP (with FF or FZ) | Open temperature sensor in the fridge (FF) or freezer (FZ) | Thermistor replacement. Inexpensive part, buried location. |
| SH (with FF or FZ) | Shorted temperature sensor | Same as above. |
| H or Hi Temp alarm | Compartment warmer than target | Not a fault code by itself. Points at whichever failure below is present. |
| dF or d1 | Defrost mode or defrost test | Normal during a defrost cycle. If constant, defrost heater or board. |
No code at all is common, especially on top-freezer and older side-by-side Frigidaires with dial controls. In that case, work through the symptoms.
What fails first on Frigidaire refrigerators (what we see in NoVA homes)
1. Evaporator fan motor
This is the most common Frigidaire cooling repair we do from Centreville to Gainesville. Symptoms: fridge warm, freezer cold or slowly warming, and either silence from the freezer or a chirp that gets louder when the freezer door opens. On Gallery French door and side-by-side units the fan sits behind the freezer’s rear panel, and replacing it means removing the shelving, the panel, and sometimes the ice maker. It is not a difficult part, but access is why it is a technician job.
2. Defrost system
Frost on the back wall of the freezer, thick ice behind the panel, cooling that comes back after the unit has been unplugged for a day. One of three parts: the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat (bi-metal) clipped to the evaporator, or the board that runs the cycle. On Frigidaire units the bi-metal thermostat fails more often than the heater, and it is a cheap part. Our humid summers make this one worse; a marginal defrost system in a Fairfax kitchen in July will lose the race with the moisture coming in every time the door opens.
3. Compressor start device (older units)
If the whole refrigerator is warm, the interior light works, and you hear a click every few minutes from the back, the compressor is trying to start and failing. On Frigidaires more than about eight years old, that is very often the start relay or PTC start device, not the compressor. The relay is a small block plugged onto the side of the compressor; a failed one often rattles when shaken. This is an inexpensive repair and one we always test before anyone says the word “compressor.” If the compressor itself is locked, see our refrigerator compressor repair page for the repair-or-replace math.
4. Thermistor
A drifting temperature sensor makes the control board think the fridge is colder than it is, so it never calls for cooling. Display units usually flag it with an OP or SH code. Symptom without a display: fridge runs in short bursts or not at all, and the actual temperature (use a thermometer) does not match the setting.
5. Main control board
Last on the list because it is the most expensive part and the most often misdiagnosed. We replace a board only after the fan, sensors and relay have been tested with a meter. A board swap on a guess is how customers end up paying twice.
What you can safely check yourself
- Coils. On most Frigidaires they are underneath, behind the front kick plate or at the back bottom. Unplug the unit and vacuum them. Pet hair is the number one reason a Frigidaire runs constantly and still will not cool in a warm kitchen.
- Settings. Set 37°F fridge, 0°F freezer. A power outage or a bumped control can leave the unit in a demo or Sabbath mode that stops cooling; check the manual for how to exit it on your model.
- Doors and gaskets. Close a dollar bill in the door; if it slides out with no drag, the gasket is not sealing. See refrigerator door seal replacement.
- Clearance. Frigidaire calls for about an inch of clearance on the sides and back. A unit boxed tightly into cabinetry in an unconditioned garage will struggle in a Virginia August no matter what.
Frigidaire repair cost in Northern Virginia
Broad national ranges, parts and labor: start relay and thermistor repairs are typically low hundreds; evaporator fan and defrost repairs low to mid hundreds; control boards mid hundreds and up. A compressor replacement is a different conversation and depends heavily on the age of the unit. Frigidaire’s standard warranty is one year on parts and labor, so anything newer than that should go to Frigidaire first. Beyond that, our service call fee is waived when you approve the repair, and our work carries a parts and labor warranty.

Frigidaire not cooling FAQ
How do I reset a Frigidaire refrigerator that is not cooling?
Unplug it for five minutes and plug it back in. That clears a stuck control board and some error codes. If it was in a demo or Sabbath mode, exit that mode per your manual. If cooling does not return within a few hours, a part has failed and a reset will not fix it.
What does SY EF mean on a Frigidaire refrigerator?
SY EF is an evaporator fan error. The control board is not detecting the fan running. It nearly always means the evaporator fan motor needs replacing, though occasionally it is a wiring connection at the fan.
Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator clicking but not cooling?
Clicking every few minutes from the back is the compressor trying to start and tripping on overload. On older Frigidaires it is usually the start relay or start device, an inexpensive repair. If the compressor itself has seized, the same click occurs, which is why it needs to be tested rather than assumed.
Is a Frigidaire refrigerator worth repairing?
For any of the common failures (fan, defrost, relay, thermistor) yes, on almost any unit under 12 years old. The repair is a fraction of replacement. The exception is a locked compressor on a unit past ten years, where we will walk through the math with you honestly.
