Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling: Check “Cooling Off” Mode First, Then These 5 Parts

Quick answer: Before you assume a part failed, check whether your Whirlpool is in Cooling Off mode. Many Whirlpool models have a setting that shuts cooling off while leaving the lights and display on, and it gets triggered by accident during cleaning or after a power outage. If the display says “Cooling Off” or the temperature settings show dashes, press and hold the button combination in your manual (often the two temperature buttons together for three seconds) to turn cooling back on. If that is not it, the five parts that fail most on Whirlpool refrigerators are the damper, the evaporator fan, the defrost system, the compressor start relay, and the control board, roughly in that order.

Cooling Off and demo mode: the free fix

We get called to Centreville and Manassas homes for a warm Whirlpool that has nothing wrong with it more often than we would like. Two settings cause it. Cooling Off is a real feature meant for cleaning; it keeps the interior lights working so the refrigerator looks normal. Showroom or demo mode does the same thing and is sometimes still active on a floor model or after a control board replacement. Both are cleared with a button hold, and the sequence varies by model, so search your model number plus “cooling off” or check the Whirlpool support site. It costs nothing to rule this out, and it is the first thing we ask on the phone.

The five Whirlpool failures, in the order we find them

1. Damper control

Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana French door refrigerators share a design, and the air damper between the freezer and fridge is the part that fails most often across all of them. The damper motor stops opening, or the door freezes shut, and the fridge slowly warms while the freezer stays cold. The damper on these models is built into the same assembly as the fridge thermistor, which is why it is replaced as a unit. You can sometimes hear it try: turn the fridge to its coldest setting and listen at the top rear of the fridge for a click.

2. Evaporator fan

Same symptom, different cause. Open the freezer, press the door switch in, and listen for the fan behind the back panel. Silence or a grinding chirp means the motor. On Whirlpool bottom-freezer units the panel is easy to reach but the fan is often iced in place if the defrost system is also failing, so we check both.

3. Defrost system

Whirlpool has used an adaptive defrost control on many models, which decides when to run defrost based on door openings and run time. When it fails, or the heater or bi-metal thermostat fails, frost builds until it blocks airflow entirely. A 24-hour unplug and thaw restores cooling for a couple of weeks. Northern Virginia summers push these over the edge; a fridge that limped through spring quits in August.

4. Start relay and overload

On Whirlpool units more than about eight years old with a fixed-speed compressor, a clicking sound from the back every two to five minutes is usually the start relay or overload protector, not the compressor. A small, inexpensive part. We test the compressor windings at the same time so nobody pays for a relay on a locked compressor.

5. Control board

Whirlpool boards are reliable, but power surges in our area (summer storms in Prince William and Loudoun are hard on electronics) do take them out. Symptoms: display works, nothing runs, or the unit cools intermittently with no pattern. We replace a board only after the parts above have tested good.

What you can do today

  • Clear Cooling Off or demo mode per your manual.
  • Unplug for five minutes to reset the board, then give it a few hours.
  • Vacuum the condenser coils. On most Whirlpool freestanding units they are behind the bottom front grille.
  • Check the vents inside the fridge are not blocked and the doors seal. See door seal replacement if the gasket is torn.
  • If there is frost on the freezer back wall, start a manual defrost and move perishables to a cooler.

Whirlpool repair cost in Northern Virginia

Broad national ranges including labor: start relay and thermistor repairs in the low hundreds; damper, evaporator fan and defrost repairs low to mid hundreds; control boards mid hundreds and up; compressor replacement is its own conversation, covered on our compressor repair page. Whirlpool’s standard warranty is one year on parts and labor, with longer sealed-system coverage on some lines, so check your serial number first. Our service call fee is waived when you approve the repair, and the work carries a parts and labor warranty.

Whirlpool not cooling FAQ

Why does my Whirlpool refrigerator say Cooling Off?

Cooling Off is a built-in mode that stops cooling while keeping lights and display on, meant for cleaning. It is usually turned on by accident or after a power outage. Hold the button combination in your manual (commonly the two temperature buttons for three seconds) to turn cooling back on.

How do I reset a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Unplug it or switch off the breaker for five minutes, then restore power. That resets the control board. If the unit was in Cooling Off or demo mode, that has to be cleared separately with the button sequence for your model.

Why is my Whirlpool freezer cold but the refrigerator warm?

On Whirlpool French door models the damper that lets freezer air into the fridge is the most common cause, followed by the evaporator fan and a frosted evaporator from a defrost failure.

Is a Whirlpool refrigerator worth repairing?

Almost always for the common failures. Whirlpool platforms are widely serviced and parts are affordable, so damper, fan, defrost and relay repairs make sense on units well past ten years old. A compressor on an old unit is the one case where we run the numbers with you.
