Quick answer: If your Samsung ice maker is not working, a reset fixes it about a third of the time. If it has frozen into a solid block more than once, the problem is not the ice maker itself. It is warm, moist refrigerator air leaking into the ice room, and no amount of resetting, defrosting, or even swapping the assembly will stop it until that air leak is sealed. Below is how to tell which problem you have, what you can do yourself, and what a lasting repair looks like.
First, figure out which Samsung ice maker problem you have
Samsung French door refrigerators (the RF23, RF26, RF28 and RF263 families are the ones we see most in Fairfax and Prince William County homes) put the ice maker inside the refrigerator compartment, in a small insulated “ice room.” That design is the root of almost every complaint. Side-by-side and bottom-freezer Samsungs keep the ice maker in the freezer and have far fewer problems. Match your symptom to the table before you do anything else.
| What you see | Most likely cause | DIY or call? |
|---|---|---|
| No ice at all, no noise, water dispenser works | Ice maker switched off, or a failed assembly | DIY first: check the switch and run the reset |
| No ice, water dispenser also slow or dead | Water filter, inlet valve, or frozen fill tube | DIY: replace filter. Valve or tube: call |
| Ice bucket frozen solid, ice maker coated in frost | Air leak into the ice room (see below) | Call. Defrosting only buys a few weeks |
| Ice is made but won’t drop, or comes out in a clump | Auger motor, bucket seated wrong, or partial freeze-up | DIY: reseat bucket. If it recurs, call |
| Loud fan noise or grinding from the ice room | Frost building on the ice-room fan | Call. This is the freeze-up problem starting |
| Water pooling under the crisper drawers | Ice room melting and dripping during defrost | Call. Same root cause as freeze-up |
The Samsung ice maker reset (do this first)
- Pull the ice bucket straight out.
- Find the small rectangular Test button on the side or underside of the ice maker. On many models it is behind a small flap.
- Hold it for about 8 to 10 seconds until you hear a chime.
- Put the bucket back and wait. The ice maker runs a fill-and-harvest cycle; you should hear water fill within a few minutes and see ice within 24 hours.
- One chime means the test passed. Multiple chimes mean the ice maker failed its self-test and needs service.
Two things people miss: the ice maker will not run if the freezer is warmer than about 10°F, and on the newer 4-door Flex models the ice scoop holder has to be installed at the front of the bucket or the unit will not make ice at all. Check both before you assume the assembly is dead. Also confirm the Ice Off indicator is not lit on the front panel. Kids and cleaning cloths hit that button more often than you would think.
Why your Samsung ice maker keeps freezing up (the part other guides skip)
Here is the pattern we see on service calls from Centreville to Gainesville: the ice maker freezes into a block. The owner defrosts it with a hair dryer and it works for two or three weeks. Then it freezes again. Eventually someone replaces the ice maker assembly and, within a couple of months, the new one freezes too. Owners on Samsung’s own support forum describe exactly this cycle, including replacements that did the same thing as the original.
The ice maker is not the problem. The ice room is supposed to be sealed off from the 37°F, humid refrigerator compartment. Over time the seams around the ice room housing and the drain and fill tube openings open up slightly, and every time the door opens, moist air gets pulled into the ice room. That moisture freezes on the ice maker, the fan, and the auger. A new ice maker installed into a leaking ice room will freeze the same way.
What a lasting repair actually involves:
- Sealing the ice room. The gaps where the ice room housing meets the refrigerator liner get sealed. The foil-tape trick that circulates on YouTube is a crude version of this, and it works better than a reset for a reason: it closes the air leak.
- The updated ice maker assembly. Samsung revised the assembly for the affected French door models. The updated part (DA97-15217D on most RF26 and RF28 units, with model-specific equivalents) has a different fill cup and better sealing than the original. If your ice maker is being replaced, it should be the revised part, not another copy of the one that failed.
- Checking the drain and the defrost heater. The ice room has its own small defrost heater and a drain. If the drain is blocked, meltwater refreezes and the whole thing locks up again.
- A fresh water filter and a check of the fill tube. A partially frozen fill tube overfills the tray on one cycle and starves it on the next, which is where clumped or hollow ice comes from.
Done together, this is the repair that holds. Done piecemeal (swap the ice maker, skip the sealing), it comes back.
Is there a Samsung ice maker recall or settlement in 2026?
Customers ask us this on almost every Samsung call, and the internet is full of conflicting answers. Here is the current state as of this writing: the main federal class action over Samsung French door ice makers (Bianchi v. Samsung Electronics America) was dismissed in January 2024 after Samsung made individual settlement offers to some consumers. There is no open nationwide settlement claim form and no CPSC recall for the ice maker defect. Sites claiming you can “file a claim” today are, at best, out of date.
What you can still do: if your refrigerator is under Samsung’s one-year warranty, or you bought an extended plan, file with them first. Out of warranty, Samsung support will sometimes offer a goodwill repair or a discounted part on a known-problem model, so it is worth a phone call with your model and serial number before paying anyone. Keep receipts either way.
What a Samsung ice maker repair costs in Northern Virginia
We do not quote from a chart because the right repair depends on which of the problems above you have, but broad ranges help you plan. A water filter is a $40 to $60 part you can replace yourself. A water inlet valve repair is typically a low-hundreds job. A full ice maker assembly replacement with ice room sealing, parts and labor, generally lands in the mid-hundreds nationally, and less if the assembly itself is still good and only the sealing and drain work are needed. Our service call fee is waived when you approve the repair, and every repair we do is backed by a parts and labor warranty.
One honest note: if the refrigerator is more than about ten years old and the sealed system (compressor or evaporator) is also showing problems, we will tell you that before you spend money on the ice maker. Read our guide on Samsung refrigerator repair for the other failures we see on these units.

Samsung ice maker FAQ
How long does a Samsung ice maker take to make ice after a reset?
Expect the first batch within 6 to 12 hours, and a full bucket in about 24 hours. A healthy Samsung ice maker drops a tray roughly every 90 minutes to two hours. If there is nothing after 24 hours, the reset did not solve it.
Why does my Samsung ice maker freeze up every few weeks?
Warm, humid air from the refrigerator compartment is leaking into the ice room and freezing on the ice maker. Defrosting removes the ice but not the leak, so it comes back. The lasting fix is sealing the ice room and, if needed, installing Samsung’s revised ice maker assembly.
Can I defrost the Samsung ice maker with a hair dryer?
Yes, on low heat and with patience. Keep it moving and away from the plastic housing so it does not warp. This gets ice production back temporarily but it is not a repair, and the freeze-up will return if the underlying air leak is not addressed.
Is it worth fixing a Samsung ice maker or should I replace the refrigerator?
If the refrigerator is cooling properly and is under about ten years old, fixing the ice maker is almost always the better value. A refrigerator with a freezing ice maker but a healthy compressor has years of life left. We only steer customers toward replacement when the sealed system is failing too.
Do you carry Samsung ice maker parts on the truck?
Yes. Our technicians stock the common revised ice maker assemblies, inlet valves and sealing materials for Samsung French door models, so most repairs in Manassas, Centreville, Fairfax and the surrounding areas are completed in a single visit.
