Quick answer: A freezer that runs but will not freeze is usually one of eight things, and they split cleanly into cheap and expensive. Cheap: dirty condenser coils, a door that is not sealing, a failed evaporator fan, a defrost failure that has iced the coil, or a bad start relay. Expensive: a refrigerant leak, a restriction, or a failed compressor. The tell is where the frost is. Frost evenly across the whole evaporator coil means the sealed system is fine and something cheap has failed. Frost only on the first few inches of the coil, or none at all with the compressor running, means refrigerant, and that is a technician job either way. A full freezer keeps food safe for about 48 hours unopened, a half-full one about 24, so you have time to diagnose before you lose anything.
Ten-minute triage
- Thermometer in, door closed, 30 minutes. “Not freezing” means different things. 15°F with soft ice cream is a very different problem from 45°F with thawing meat. Freezers should hold 0°F.
- Is the compressor running? Put a hand on the back lower panel. A steady hum and warmth means yes. Silence with the lights on means the start relay, the board, or the compressor.
- Is the evaporator fan running? Open the door, hold the door switch in, listen for the fan behind the back panel. No fan means no cold air moves, even with a perfect compressor.
- Look at the back panel. A thick sheet of frost or ice on the panel means a defrost failure. Airflow is blocked. Temporary fix: unplug for 24 hours with the door open.
- Coils and clearance. Pull the unit out and look at the condenser coils. Pet hair and dust are the number one reason a freezer in a Fairfax garage cannot keep up in July.
- Dollar-bill test on the gasket. No drag anywhere around the door means warm air is pouring in. Chest freezer lids and upright freezer doors both wear at the corners.
The eight causes, ranked by what they cost
| Cause | Clue | Fix | National cost range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dirty condenser coils | Runs constantly, worse in heat | Vacuum them yourself | Free |
| Bad door gasket | Frost around the door edge, dollar bill slides out | Gasket replacement | Low to mid hundreds |
| Start relay / overload | Click every few minutes, compressor silent | Replace the relay | Low hundreds |
| Evaporator fan motor | Compressor runs, no fan sound, frost on coil | Replace the fan | Low to mid hundreds |
| Defrost heater / thermostat / timer | Ice sheet on back panel, works after a thaw | Replace the failed defrost part | Low to mid hundreds |
| Thermostat or control board | Runs erratically, temperature ignores the setting | Test, then replace | Low hundreds to mid hundreds |
| Refrigerant leak or restriction | Compressor runs, coil frosts only at the inlet or not at all | Sealed-system repair | Mid hundreds to around a thousand |
| Compressor | Runs but no cooling, or silent and hot | Sealed-system compressor replacement | See our compressor cost guide |
For the last two rows, read refrigerator compressor replacement cost before you approve anything. The same misdiagnosis rules apply to freezers: many “compressor” calls are a relay, a board, or a seized condenser fan.
The garage freezer problem in Northern Virginia
Half the freezer calls we run in Prince William and western Fairfax County are second freezers in garages, and the garage is the problem. In a Manassas or Gainesville garage in August, ambient temperatures pass 95°F, and a standard freezer’s condenser cannot shed heat fast enough; it runs nonstop and still creeps up. In January the opposite happens: below about 40°F, a refrigerator-freezer combo stops calling for cooling because the fridge section is already cold, and the freezer thaws. Chest freezers handle both extremes better than uprights. If your garage freezer struggles in summer, clean the coils first, give it six inches of clearance, and keep it out of direct sun. If it fails in winter, look for a “garage kit” heater for your model or accept that a garage refrigerator-freezer needs a garage-rated unit.
How long is frozen food safe?
Food safety guidance: a full, unopened freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours; a half-full one about 24. Do not open it to check. When power or cooling returns, anything that still has ice crystals or reads 40°F or below can be refrozen. Meat that has fully thawed and warmed above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded. If a repair is a day out, a bag of ice or dry ice in the freezer extends the window.
When to stop and call
Call when the compressor is running and the coil is not frosting, when the compressor is silent and hot, when the unit clicks and never starts, or when a manual defrost fixed it for two weeks and it is back. Those need a meter and gauges. Everything in the free-and-cheap rows above is worth trying first, and we will tell you on the phone whether your symptom sounds like one of them.

Freezer FAQ
Why is my freezer running but not freezing?
If it runs constantly and stays cool but not frozen, the most common causes are dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, a frosted-over coil from a defrost failure, or a leaking door gasket. If it runs and gets no colder than room temperature, suspect refrigerant or the compressor.
Why does my garage freezer stop working in summer?
Garage temperatures above 90°F overwhelm the condenser, especially with dirty coils or poor clearance. Clean the coils, allow six inches around the unit, and keep it out of sun. In winter, a refrigerator-freezer combo can stop cooling below about 40°F ambient; a garage-rated model or a manufacturer garage kit solves that.
How long does food last in a freezer that stopped working?
About 48 hours if the freezer is full and stays closed, about 24 hours if half full. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be safely refrozen.
Is it worth repairing a chest freezer?
For a relay, thermostat, gasket or fan, yes at almost any age; chest freezers are simple and long-lived. A compressor or refrigerant leak on a small chest freezer often costs more than a new one, and we will say so.
