LG Refrigerator Compressor Failure: The Warranty Math, the Error Codes, and When to Stop Repairing

Quick answer: LG covers the linear compressor part for 10 years, but labor only for the first year. So on a five-year-old LG, the compressor is free and you pay for a sealed-system repair, which nationally runs in the mid-hundreds to around a thousand dollars. Before anyone quotes that, the failure has to be confirmed, because a bad start relay, inverter board or a seized condenser fan will show the same symptoms for a fraction of the cost. Our rule: first compressor failure on an LG under about eight years old, repair it properly (compressor, filter drier, vacuum, charge). Second compressor failure on the same unit, put the money toward a replacement.

Symptoms of an LG compressor failure

  • Both the fridge and freezer warm up over 12 to 36 hours. Lights, display and fans all work.
  • The compressor is silent, or it runs but the unit never gets cold.
  • Ice cream is soft and the ice maker stops before the fridge feels warm.
  • Error code on the display when you enter diagnostic mode (below).

If only the fridge is warm and the freezer is fine, stop here: that is not the compressor. Read refrigerator not cooling but freezer works instead.

Pull the error code before you call anyone

Most LG French door and side-by-side models have a built-in diagnostic mode. With the doors closed, press and hold the Refrigerator and Ice Plus buttons together for about three seconds. The display cycles through stored codes. Write them down and give them to whoever you call; it changes the diagnosis conversation.

LG codeMeaningWhat it points to
67 (or 67 / CO)Compressor lock / compressor not turningThe classic linear compressor failure code, but also thrown by a failed inverter board driving a good compressor
22Compressor relay faultRelay or inverter board
23Condenser fan faultA seized condenser fan overheats the compressor and mimics compressor failure. Cheap fix if caught early.
Er FF / Er rFFreezer or fridge fan errorEvaporator fan, not the compressor
Er dHDefrost errorDefrost heater or sensor

A code 67 is not proof the compressor is dead. On our calls, a meaningful share of “dead LG compressors” turn out to be the inverter control board or the condenser fan. A proper diagnosis means checking the board output, the compressor windings, and system pressures. It takes 30 to 60 minutes. If someone quotes a compressor from the doorway in ten minutes, get a second opinion.

The warranty math nobody explains

LG’s standard warranty on the Inverter Linear Compressor is 10 years on the part. Labor is covered only in year one on most models, with some premium lines carrying longer labor coverage. That gap is why a year-six failure feels expensive: the compressor itself costs you nothing, but the job to install it is a full sealed-system repair.

What a correct sealed-system repair includes, and why it is priced the way it is:

  1. Recovering the old refrigerant with EPA-certified equipment (required by law; this is not a DIY job).
  2. Cutting out the old compressor and brazing in the new one.
  3. Replacing the filter drier. Skipping this is the number one reason a replacement compressor fails within a year; a failing compressor sheds debris and moisture into the system, and the old drier is saturated.
  4. Pulling a deep vacuum, then charging with the exact refrigerant weight on the data plate.
  5. Verifying pressures and running the unit down to temperature.

Three things to check before paying anyone: your warranty status by serial number at LG’s site or by calling LG at 1-800-243-0000; whether a retailer extended plan is on file (many Best Buy and Home Depot purchases came with one that customers forget); and, if the unit was bought between 2014 and 2017, whether the linear compressor class settlement (final approval 2020) still offers reimbursement for your model. LG has also run a flat-rate repair program for out-of-warranty compressor jobs; availability changes, so ask LG directly what they will offer on your serial number.

LG compressor repair cost in Northern Virginia

We do not publish a fixed price because the answer depends on warranty status and what the diagnosis finds. Broad ranges: an inverter board or condenser fan misdiagnosed as a compressor is a low-to-mid hundreds repair. A sealed-system compressor replacement with the part covered by LG’s 10-year warranty is a labor-and-materials job that nationally lands in the mid hundreds to around a thousand. Out of warranty with the compressor purchased outright, published national ranges run from roughly $700 to $1,250 and higher for built-in or large-capacity units. Our service call fee is waived when you approve the repair, and the work carries a parts and labor warranty.

When we tell customers to stop repairing

Here is the honest read we give in Fairfax and Prince William homes every week. First compressor failure, unit under about eight years old, no other sealed-system history: repair it, and do it properly with a new drier. The rest of the refrigerator has years left and a correctly installed compressor lasts. Second compressor failure on the same unit, or a first failure on a unit past ten years with an out-of-warranty part: replacement usually wins, because you are paying near half the price of a new refrigerator to fix a system that has already shown a pattern. If the evaporator has also leaked, that is the same answer. We will give you the number both ways and let you decide.

LG compressor FAQ

Is the LG compressor really covered for 10 years?

The part is, on most models with the Inverter Linear Compressor. Labor is covered only in the first year on most units, so out of year one you pay for the sealed-system labor while LG supplies the compressor. Confirm your specific coverage with your serial number.

Can I reset an LG compressor by unplugging the refrigerator?

No. A linear compressor does not reset. Unplugging for a few minutes can clear a stuck control board, which is worth trying once, but if the compressor has failed it will not come back.

What does error code 67 mean on an LG refrigerator?

Code 67 indicates the control board could not get the compressor to run. It is the common code for a failed linear compressor, but a failed inverter board driving a healthy compressor produces the same code, so it needs to be tested rather than assumed.

Should I repair or replace an LG refrigerator with a bad compressor?

First failure on a unit under about eight years old: repair, properly. Second compressor failure, or a unit past ten years with the part out of warranty: replacement is usually the better use of the money.
